Who we are?

Black Nurses and Midwives UK (BNMUK) is a community of professionals including students, who are passionate about healthcare and are committed to sharing their experiences and career development in order to empower others to achieve their professional development.

BNMUK was founded in the mist of the pandemic and the death of George Floyd, where unfamiliar times resulted in unfamiliar places (redeployment). Heightened emotions and feelings of not being heard, supported and listened to resulted in connecting with other nurses and midwives who felt the same. “Championing us felt needed and these scary times resulted in forming a community, harvesting new relationships and creating a sense of belonging”.

The main purpose of BNMUK is to continue to champion these professionals and through peer to peer support to help to inspire, empower and connect other black nurses, midwives and students. Also highlight prospective nursing and midwifery careers that are not commonly spoken about for example careers beyond the bedside.

We also know that the lack of black nursing and midwifery representation in senior management positions exists. Creating opportunities for connecting senior nurses and midwives to inspire junior staff and the next generation of professionals.

Diversifying the workforce is important not only in ensuring inclusion of diverse professionals but also improving the health outcomes of black and brown people.
